After three straight weeks of rainouts at Sandusky Speedway, we were able to finally see some short track action at the half mile with the Beginner Stocks kicking off the show, followed by the Lake Erie Stocks, Renegades and Crate Winged Sprints to finish things off.
In the first feature of the night, the three car field for the Beginner stocks was led by Ben Watson to the green flag. After dominating much of the race and seeming to pull away, Watson over drove turn three and left the track momentarily allowing Tanner Smith to take over the top spot.
After the restart Smith was able to easily pull away and took the feature win. Watson able to battle back to second place followed by Colton Fowler.
In the second feature of the night the Lake Erie Stocks presented by Interstate Towing, took center stage. With Carl Smith leading the field to the green he was able to sweep the evening events for the Lake Erie Stocks taking home the top spots in the Qualifying, Heat and Feature.
Tom Hardwick, who led the early portions of the race, spun from second place after contact with Dwayne Fox as they were battling behind leader Smith. Hardwick was able to recover and finish in a strong second place.
In the finish of the night at Sandusky Speedway, the Renegades presented by Lubrication Supply saw a side by side finish between Brandon Halcomb and Dan Smith.
After Halcomb seemingly started pulling away from the rest of the field, Smith slowly started reeling in the leader and with five laps to go Smith was able to get to the back bumper with the leader and the fight was on.
During the five lap battle Smith looked high several times to try and get around Halcomb, but was unable to find a suitable line until the final lap when he was able to get to the quarter panel of Halcomb and it was a drag race to the finish line coming off of turn 4.
Winning the feature by less than 4 one hundredths of a second, Halcomb was able to secure his first feature win at Sandusky Speedway since the 2016 season.
To wrap up the features for the night, the Crate Winged Sprints came to town for the first time this season. Leading the field to the green flag, Todd Mcquillen was quickly taken over by Charlie Schultz. Schultz was able to pull away from the field until Dylan Watson slowly started driving through the field from the 8th starting position, but once he got to second place he was stuck there.
With the leaders starting to catch lap traffic near the end of the 20 lap feature it seemed that Watson might be able to give Schultz a run to the checkers, but it was not to be as Schultz was able to drive through the lap traffic much better and put some distance between him and second place Watson.
Watson made one last effort on the final lap, but it was not to be as Schultz was able to take the checkered flag in the final feature of the night.
Next week the Sandusky Speedway will be racing on Sunday Night May 26th with the MSS Supermodifieds, Lake Erie Stocks, Renegades and Beginner stocks. Pits open at 3, gates open at 4 and racing starts at 7.
